Sometimes, when reviewing your images, you can detect a subtle, or not so subtle, underlying interest. By this I mean detecting a way of looking at things that you might not even have been conscious of at the time you took the photograph. These underlying currents need not be manifest in the serious 'fine art' type of images that you put in your portfolio, they may just be apparent in the 'stuff' that you shoot for fun. I am referring to what comes out when you are shooting playfully to see if you can make images that you find interesting yourself, without necessarily having plans to show them to others.
So what did I find for myself when I was glancing through my images, which is obviously what motivated me to write this post?
It was apparent that I like discovering and portraying the graphic patterns in nature:

When I'm waiting for the serious shots, like a hummingbird coming back to feed at some flowers, I find myself taking random shots of all sorts of other things, tree bark, dandelions, deadfall, clouds. Sometimes I get so carried away with my random shooting I miss the bird when it comes around because I've changed all my settings do the other stuff. Is there a pattern or theme to my random shooting? Perhaps my children will discover the pattern to my madness when they look at all the bizarre images I've backed up since digital cameras allowed me to shoot all I want.
The patterns are really neat, the mushroom shot would have thrown me if you hadn't explained it, very creative work Howard.
Thanks very much Bernie. Con, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I have an idea to go photograph something and get totally distracted and end up doing something completely different. But thats not so bad...I think you probably make better images if you follow the muse instead of dragging it :>)

I love patterns myself, can't help but be drawn to them. Sometimes the order of things is just something to sit down and ponder for awhile.
All of these are great. I wouldn't have guessed the mushroom either!

Yes, I know I've sometimes forced mine to focus on the ordinary in front of me when the fantastic was waiting just over my shoulder.
